Last week Hongbon had asked us each to write a blog post including words and pictures, and today one of our friends posted this on WeChat. Take a look. This is Rosie’s blog they choose to post but all of us wrote similar things.
Today myself and Alice randomly bumped into Irene. The new fashion teacher at Cardiff Met, in the court yard of BIFT today. So bizarre, but lovely meeting her. Instead of going to our lesson we decided to go to her talk with first years about portfolios in fashion and Cardiff Met.
I found the talk really inspiring and informative. The idea of creating portfolios in this way is very new to me. However, I really like the idea of creating something that shows who I am, and that speaks to the customer. Perhaps in the form of a book or even computer software. So inspiring tho, I think everyone should get the chance to hear what Irene has to say.
After the talk we went to lunch with our friends Zoe and Tine, Omar and a few other teachers who I do not know the names of. It was in a special part of the cafeteria, upstairs in what looked like a separate restaurant. But it was lovely to be treated to lunch. I can only assume this was Irenes first time using chopsticks because it was very funny, but all in all such a lovely morning and she’s such a lovely and funny lady. Can’t wait to talk her more in Cardiff when I return home.
After Lunch, me and Alice went back to our class to continue with our research and development project. After which we then went shopping in Beijing central with Zoe, Tina, Lucia, Sue, Vivie, Dylan and maybe a few more. Take a look at our photos:
Today was a really bad day for me. We were taught how to create a pattern for jeans. From my personal opinion this is the hardest thing in the world. I attempted to take photos of the whole process but after lunch, creating the life size scale, I somehow missed a very small step from the beginning and messed my whole pattern up. True to say I was instantly upset and annoyed. I think today is the day I learnt why I choose textiles because its not a precise subject, and I’m clearly not good at being precise.
This is the final finished example of what they should look like: Super complicated looking!!!
Today, Lola, Sherleen and Myself visited the national museum of China. I am so glad they invited me because it was such an amazing day out. I learnt to much about Chinese history and culture and think this was a great experience. We first looked around the main exhibition about evolution and the history of Chinas people. I thought the evolution part was good because it was in english, but also because when we learn about evolution, you never know from what parts of the world it began in, so this was very interesting to me. Also now that I am older I had a better understating and appreciation for the art work created because I never understood before today how many years ago different artefacts were made but it really became clear to me today.
We also looked around the silk road exhibition, however, this exhibition was all in Chinese so I could not understand it clearly. But the girls tried to translate for me and I was fascinated by the colours, textures, patterns and techniques used on the different garments.
lastly we took at look around the war exhibition and the architectural exhibition. Before today I knew very little about the world wars that took place in China. But today the girls gave me a short history lesson about the war between china and japan, and how the emperor led them to victory. Overall today was such a fantastic learning opportunity for myself, and I would like to come back one day with Rosie and Alice to show them what I have learnt and also to see the many other exhibitions. The museum is huge and has five different floors but maybe today I only saw one floor. So next time I would like to look around new parts. Please take the time to view all 80 photos.
After we left the museum the girls took me on the subway to an interesting cafe they found online. It was a cat cuddling cafe. Where everything is about cats, and you can have tea and coffee while stroking cats. It was such a weird place, however, very quirky and such an experience. I told Rosie and Alice and they want to go too. Its so funny.
Today Hongbon took us to a famous shopping mall in Beijing, with lots of famous fashion designer brands here. It was really exciting to go shopping but many things were too expensive for us to buy. But not everything. Me and Rosie went in to Mac to try on lots of new and different coloured Lipsticks which we eventually bought. I bought a fantastic bright shade of purple and Rosie choose a dark mysterious blue colour which I loved. I went shopping for shoes and found an amazing pair which even had my name on them. But they were very expensive and did not fit right so I decided to leave them. We also went in this Chanel experience thing where we received free fake tattoos and perfume. To end the day off we got cocktails and nachos from a Mexican restaurant which was fabulous. Still cannot believe we are in Beijing. This is such a fantastic opportunity, and I am so lucky to be here with such great people.
Today again I was with my first grade class, on my own. But the previous evening I had spoken to two girls in my class who said to me that we were going to the fabric market in the afternoon and to bring money, which I was really excited about. When I got into class I was really quite confused. My teacher spoke no english and all the slides were in Chinese, so I was totally confused about what we were being taught. Both Lola and Sherleen tried to translate for me but there english is not so good.
In the afternoon, Lola and Sherleen took me in a taxi to the other side of Beijing to find the fabric market. It was in a very bizarre location however, I found and bought some beautiful fabrics which I hope to use in my new work.
After this, the girls took me to the shopping mall for afternoon tea and dinner where we ate the Beijing duck, which was amazing. I had never eaten the Beijing duck quite like this before, but it was such a fantastic meal with such lovely company. Also today was the day that I received my Chinese name. I gave Lola her name because she did not have an english name and thought it suited her very well. And I said she should give me a Chinese name, which she picked Mulan, because of the meaning of Victoria my real name. She said it suited me well and that the history of the Chinese warrior was made into a Disney film which I thought was lovely.
This was my first drawing techniques in fashion class, with grade 1 students. At first I was so nervous because I did not know anyone in my class and secondly I really dislike drawing because I get easily frustrated when things don’t go right.
When I got into class, I was seated next to a girl who spoke little english. I attempted to copy my teachers drawing on the board, and at first I was really pleased with how my drawings went. I asked for feedback from the teacher, but the lack of English made it very hard to communicate with her, and she re-drew my work for me. I was so confused because it wasn’t constructive criticism she just done it for me. However, I think my work will get better over time, it just takes practice.
After class I spoke to some other girls in my class who said for homework we should practice the drawings we had done today in class. So when I got home I practiced these positions. I think the hardest bit for me in the Legs, Making sure they are straight, also the feet because they look so unrealistic.
